Weyerbacher Blasphemy

Weyerbacher BlasphemyWeyerbacher Brewing Company is a microbrewery in Easton, Pennsylvania founded in 1995 by Dan and Sue Weirback, known for their “huge taste” beers. Most of their brews are high in alcohol and Weyerbacher is a pioneer of aging beer in wooden barrels previously used for aging bourbon. Weyerbacher Blasphemy is their QUAD (a Belgian-style Quadruple) aged in bourbon barrels.

The beer pours a hazy amber color with copper hues. The head is thin, off-white in color and dissipates rather quickly without any notable lacing.

On the nose, you pick up notes of overripe (almost fermented) fruits of banana and cantaloupe. Dried fruit notes of raisins and plums are also discernible. There is strong bready note that carries through from start to finish and highlights the sweet vanilla, brown sugar and caramel notes. The aromas convey a deep, heavy and saturated profile.

On the palate, the bouquet is brought to life. Notes of rich, creamy, almost overly ripe bananas are again highlighted by notes of sweet, rich raisins. There is an obvious sweet malt note that bares flavors of brown sugar, molasses and caramel perfectly intertwined with yeast bready notes. There is a slight hop finish that provided balance to the sweetness but certainly does not show any real bitterness. With its bouquet, flavor profile and thick mouthfeel Blasphemy is very similar to a German Doppelbock.

A great beer by Weyerbacher, proving why they have been famous for their barrel aged beers. Be sure to serve this one at cellar temperature for best taste.
