Lost Abbey Deliverance

Lost Abbey DeliveranceLost Abbey Brewing Company is a brewery in San Marcos, California run by Tomme Arthur. They specialize in producing Belgian-style beers, including strong ales and sours, and are some of the most talked about on the market today. Tasty and balanced with amazing complexity, their “Deliverance” is a perfect example of this complexity. Deliverance is a blend of Angel’s Share (a strong ale aged in brandy barrels) and Serpent’s Stout (a stout aged in bourbon barrels).

The beer pours black as night. Even when viewed directly against a light source it remains jet black. There is a late forming brown head that is barely half a finger, settles quickly and disappears back into the glass leaving no lacing.

On the nose there are notes of dried dark fruits, mainly raisins. There are also rich aromas of molasses and brown sugar with a hint of caramel and toffee. Both the angel and the serpent offer up a signature aroma to round out the bouquet. The angel brings a sweet and creamy note of vanilla while the serpent offers a rich, dark cocoa aroma.

The bouquet revisits you on the palate. Boozy notes of dark dried fruits including raisins, prunes and figs offer a luscious sweet note. There is a note on unsweetened chocolate that adds a slight bittering to the sweet fruits. Flavors of malts, oaked vanilla and caramel follow on the heels of the chocolate and breathe the sweetness back into the beer. The beer is rather viscous and extremely complex and satisfying.

Deliverance will deliver you from the curse of drinking the same old beers. This is something special! Try it with and English Stilton, braised pork chops with caramelized onions or sticky toffee pudding. 4 Out Of 5 Pints
