Cigar City Florida Cracker

Hailing from the land of theme parks florida-cracker-web-2and golf carts, Tampa’s Cigar City brewing is now one of the area’s major attractions. Founded in 2009, Cigar City has won numerous awards and has grown from producing around 1,000 barrels a year, to over 65,000 last year. A recent partnership with Oskar Blues should allow even further growth over the next few years, so keep an eye out for wider distribution of these Florida favorites!

Einstök Icelandic White Ale

einstok white aleThe Einstök Brewery is located 60 miles south of the Arctic Circle, in the fishing port of Akureyri, Iceland. Water flows from rain and prehistoric glaciers down the Hlíðarfjall Mountain, delivering the purest water on earth, the perfect foundation for brewing deliciously refreshing handcrafted ales. Led by Brewmaster Baldur Karason, previously with Carlsburg and Lowenbrau, Baldur completed the brewing program at the world renowned Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. One of the brewery’s most well-known offerings is their White Ale.

ABV: 5.2%

Pour: A light yellowish with a hazy hue and slight carbonation.

Head: A small off-white head forms in the glass before quickly disappearing, leaving minimal lacing.

Nose: Light malt notes, hints of lemon and wheat dominate the nose.

Palate: Light and airy. Notes of lemon zest, orange peel, coriander and wheat bounce off each other. Not much of a hop presence but hints of mineraility leave a clean finish.

Overall: I like when brewers take the unfiltered route. The small amount of sediment left behind adds texture and earthy flavor. The flavor is smooth and doesn’t have a mass produced feel while being refreshing. Must be that pure Icelandic glacier water! A nice pairing with steamed mussels and chorizo, herb crusted cheeses and fresh berry medley.

Allagash White

allagash-whiteAllagash Brewing Company started in 1995 as a one-man operation in a small space on the outskirts of Portland, Maine. Founder Rob Tod had worked in a brewery before, and recognized a void within the craft brewing movement. He designed a small 15-barrel brew-house, gathered the finest array of authentic raw materials, and began his quest towards the production of traditional Belgian style ales. Today, Allagash is known coast-to-coast for an amazing portfolio of delicious Belgian inspired brews.

Allagash White is a Belgian style wit beer. This lighter style wheat beer stands out due to a double fermentation brewing style. This brew is first fermented in tanks and cooled, then before being bottled a small amount of yeast and sugar are added for a second fermentation in the bottle.

Pours a hazy light yellow with a soft head. The head dissipates moderately leaving behind a nice lacing on the glass.

The nose has big spice notes. Coriander and orange peel are center stage with notes of clove in the background. Some slight fruity notes, like bananas and lemons are present followed by a nice maltiness.

It has a lighter to medium body and the cloves show on the first sip. This leads to fruit notes of oranges and bananas followed by a mild sweetness from the malt. There is a slight acidity from the citrus fruits not much hoppy bitterness.

A great year round selection and refreshing during unseasonably warm temperatures. If you’re a fan of Blue Moon or Shocktop and looking to try something new, you won’t be disappointed. This beer goes great with seafood, from fish and chips to lobster rolls. No surprise there with this beer coming from the heart of Maine.

Westbrook Brewing White Thai

Westbrook White ThaiWestbrook is a craft brewery in Mt. Pleasant, SC. It was founded by the husband and wife team of Morgan and Edward Westbrook in December 2010. They claim that their “mission is to make the most interesting, drinkable, and generally awesome beer possible.” They love experimenting with different ingredients and brewing techniques. One of their offerings is a witbier spiced with lemongrass, ginger root, and a dash of Sorachi Ace hops named White Thai.

The beer pours a hazy light golden yellow color. The two finger dense white head shows excellent retention. Once the head has dissipated completely a light lacing remains both atop the beer as well as along the sides of the glass.

On the nose you’ll find abundant aromas of wheat and yeast that are accented by notes of orange zest, lemon and ginger. There are grassy and floral hop notes that mingle with spice notes of pepper and clove.

The palate is very similar to the bouquet. Wheat notes highlighted by clove and pepper spice are immediately met by lemon and ginger. Grassy and floral hop notes add a slight bitterness. The finish is crisp and clean and carries a light spiciness. The creamy mouthfeel of the beer is what really makes it stand out.

An interesting play on a traditional witbier. Westbrook really lived up to their mission on this one! A refreshing and easy to drink brew that is perfect for pairing with a nice goat cheese, Thai lemongrass roast chicken or lemon spice cake. 4.5 out of 5 Pints

Einstok White Ale

Einstok White AleThe Einstök Brewery is located 60 miles south of the Arctic Circle, in the fishing port of Akureyri, Iceland. Water flows from rain and prehistoric glaciers down the Hlíðarfjall Mountain, delivering the purest water on earth, the perfect foundation for brewing deliciously refreshing handcrafted ales. One of the brewery’s most well-known offerings is their White Ale.

The beer pours a slightly hazy light straw yellow color. The one finger white head dissipates rather quickly and leaves behind a minimal sporadic lacing atop the beer.

The nose offers tons of bright coriander and great pepper spice. Notes of citrus, namely orange, mixes with the spice notes. There is a light vegetable note as well. Malt and wheat aromas round out the bouquet.

The palate echoes the bouquet rather seamlessly. Bright coriander and white pepper spice hit up front and are met rather quickly with citrus notes of orange and lemon. The same non-descriptive vegetable note from the bouquet appears on the palate as well. A wheat note arrives with a hint of oats. The finish showcases some floral and grassy hop notes.

A very refreshing and well crafted beer. Who would have thought the folks in Iceland would be brewing experts! Try this delicious White Ale with Monterrey Jack, broiled sea scallops or zucchini muffins. PintRate-4

Badger Hill White IPA

Badger Hill White IPAFounded in 2011, Badger Hill Brewing Company is a craft brewery in Minnetonka, MN. It was started by two brothers with a hankering for travel and craft beer. Badger Hill is a rough translation of the two brothers’ names in Old English and speaks to the influence of their European heritage. Their portfolio currently boasts five core products and several limited releases. Once a limited release, Badger Hill’s White IPA is now a yearly offering.

The beer pours a hazy pale yellow color. The two finger creamy, soapy head is bright white in color and shows great retention. While the head dissipates extremely slowly, once it has, a beautiful and generous lacing is left both atop the beer and on the sides of the glass.

Typical White Ale aromas of bright coriander spice and orange zest lead the bouquet. White floral hop notes follow and citrus hop notes chime in to represent the IPA side of the beer. Wheat beer aromas of ripe bananas are also notable.

On the palate there are elements of both a typical White Ale and a typical IPA. The White Ale notes hit right off the bat with bright coriander spice and sweet orange flavors flooding the palate. On the IPA side, white floral and citrus hop notes, dominated by flavors of grapefruit pith, provide a slight bittering and add complexity. The finish is crisp with a touch of lingering hops.

Badger Hill White IPA truly is a marriage between an IPA and a White Ale. It is crisp, clean and refreshing session beer. Trying pairing this one with sharp cheddar, a classic cheeseburger or orange glazed sponge cake. 4 out of 5 Pints

Hitachino White Ale

hitichino white aleThe Kiuchi Brewery was established in 1823 by Kiuchi Gihei, the headman of Kounosu Village. His family was collecting rice from farmers as land taxes and he began his brewery with the idea of using the remaining rice stocks in the warehouse. Kiuchi named the brand “Hitachino Nest Beer,” which features a unique owl logo. Over the years, Kiuchi Brewery has gained worldwide attention and one of their core items is their White Ale, brewed with citrus and spice.

The beer pours a hazy golden yellow color with notable suspended sediment throughout. The half finger fluffy white head dissipates rather quickly and leaves just a touch of spotty lacing, and a ring of foam around the perimeter of the glass.

Pronounced aromas of lemon and orange zest dominate. White floral notes along with a touch of bright coriander spice hits next. A hint of white pepper follows the bright coriander. All of the citrus, floral and spice notes are heightened by a sweet grainy wheat aroma.

On the palate citrus notes of lemon zest and orange once again dominate. Ginger, like a pickled sushi ginger, highlight the citrus. Spice notes of coriander brighten the flavor profile even more. A hint of sweet wheat hides beneath the refreshing notes of citrus and spice. Crisp and clean, this beer is the perfect palate cleanser!

Hitachino White Ale is the perfect beer for summer or anytime you want a beer that provides true refreshment. Try pairing this one with Chèvre, Dim Sum or lemon meringue pie. PintRate-4
